How are Lenses different from normal peer review? How do I explain this to my boss?

Document Actions
Our mechanism for peer review involves reviewing materials *after* they have been published in Connexions. Our method of post-publication peer review is called "lensing". Using this system, reviewing bodies (professional societies, corporations, universities, etc.) can create lists of materials in Connexions that they deem to be of high quality. We call these lists "lenses" since they allow a user to "focus" on the items in Connexions the lens maker deeps to be of high quality or interest. To see the set of lists we have in Connexions, please go to
http://cnx.org/lenses. For example, the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration, a professional organization, have a lens at http://cnx.org/lenses/ncpea/endorsements. When a Connexions author wishes to have her materials lensed, she can contact the lens makers directly and submit her modules/collections for lensing. Each lens maker will have its own policies on reviewing materials for their lens and standards for lensed content. Once the lens maker has deemed content lensable, they then add it to the lens along with a set of tags
describing the new entry.

This is of course different than traditional peer review in that materials are first published in Connexions and then may be vetted. The agencies controlling the vetting (here, the lens makers) are not the agencies enabling the publishing (here, Connexions). But such a post-publication method of peer review is necessary so that Connexions can continue to grow indefinitely both in number of submissions and the breadth of the content submitted.
