Terminology:

We need to come up with a consistent set of terminology and what it means. We have ideas, but haven't completely formulated a model for what we are trying to achieve. Below are some terms and various suggestions as to what they mean.

  • Lens
    • A lens is a rule that computes a set of modules.
  • Compound Lens
  • Filter
  • Global View Filter
  • Attribute
  • Lens Data/ Rule Set/ Member list
  • Lens Behavior -- selection of content, display of the content (module rendering), branding, application of trust network
  • Applying a lens
  • Named Set of lenses
  • Create a lens / apply filters
  • Trust network / Web of trust
  • Endorsement
  • Affiliation
  • Content-by an organization (just an extension of "author" but for organization account category)
  • Lens profile
  • Endorsements page -- what is this? Is it a lens?
  • Customization and co-branding

Issues to think about:

  • What do we call them? Who can make them? How persistent are they?
  • Lens Authoring Payback: Chris pointed out that endorsers and lens builders need to have an incentive to do the work of reviewing and selecting content. We need to give them "authoring" credit and some sort of payback for the work.
  • Quality Control is the chief issue that brought about the idea of lenses so that needs to be at the forefront of the design thinking
  • Lens Types: Regardless of implementation, some types of lenses seem different from each other and may need to be distinguished in some way.
    • Automated vs. authored
    • Authoritative vs. Grassroots/Community
    • Endorsed vs. Tagged
    • Implicit (attribute of the content) vs. Explicit (hand selected)
  • Applying and Disabling lensy things
    • Preferential/Restrictive/Highlighting
    • Quick disable to see what you are missing (use case -- authoring, reader exploring outside lens)
    • Turning off part or all of the lensy thing
    • Switching "profiles"
  • Types of quality control
    • Endorsement (IEEE chooses good content)
    • Affiliation (Content by IEEE members)
    • Who chooses which lists are endorsements/affliliations that get elevated in the display? -- Idea: Trust network is another lens aspect.
    • Content-by (Content created by an IEEE organizational account)
  • Explaining the difference between a lens and a filtered search
  • Lens statistics on authors page -- how many lenses select this content
  • Reviews/Tags/Lenses box for discovering lenses through the content.
  • What is?
    • ni.cnx.org (application of NI lens?)
    • cnx.org/ni (currently the endorsement page thing)
    • applying ni from the lensy page thing
  • Lenses to go for:
    • IEEE Signal Processing
    • Music : Ask Tony Brandt what to seek out
    • Statistics: Ask David Lane and Martha?
    • Rice ECE

Mockups needed:

  • Showing Endorsements/Affiliations box and Other Lists box (better name needed)?
  • Showing coming in through a lens
