In anticipation of a new usability study for the Word importer/EIP-style editing interface, I have been working some help windows that would be integrated into the page in order to provide more information to users about each of our tags. Essentially, they provide the same kind of information that's in the spec, but would be easily accessible from the module-editing page in the form of a handy little pop-up window. It would be accessed from the same drop-down menu from which one adds a paragraph, example, etc., and it reads "Other elements ...", I believe.

I've been writing these pages up in a made-up XML format and spitting them out into HTML with an XSL stylesheet I also made up. Brent would like these to eventually come from the same place the spec comes from.

The reason I wanted to make these pages, by the way, is because I figured that from the new editing interface, authors might have no clue that CNXML included anything other than the 8 or so elements we offer from the drop-down menu, and I wanted to make sure they were somehow made aware the existence of other things like our inline tags, without having to learn all of CNXML.

Brent also had the excellent idea of adding a link to these windows from the box within which one edits a particular element (i.e. click on a paragraph to edit it, and a link to the upper right reads "Help editing the para tags"). Having just completed the usability studies (more on that in another blog posting) I can say that both locations for access to these help pages (not to mention the help pages themselves) proved useful.
