Jared Spool gave the following definition of Web 2.0:
1. API's -- the ability to get the data without going through the UI
2. RSS
3. Folksonomies and tagging
4. Social networking
or is it just "marketing hype"?

Web 2.0 is …

“marketing hype” …

Jared Spool gave the following definition:

1. API’s – the ability to get the data without going through the UI
2. RSS
3. Folksonomies and tagging
4. Social networking

From what I have been reading, this seems like a fairly usable list and these are all things that we at Connexions have been making headway into and feel are important for longterm viability. API’s clearly are important so that we aren’t a one way silo of information, but rather can be integrated with Learning Management Systems and value-added services. RSS gives us a way to tie our content into many other systems. Tagging and social networking are how the content becomes a meaningful collection for a community of people, rather than a global hodgepodge of random stuff. Connect, View Everywhere, Lens.

What do you think our penetration on any of these areas is? My first somewhat arbitrary speculation would be 20%-40% pretty much on all of them – maybe higher for API’s. A good start, but a long way to go. Other thoughts? Is my estimate too low?

Since we have several major efforts ongoing right now – Plone 2.5, Assemble and print on demand, EIP section adding and clearer navigation, LaTeX conversion – we don’t really have bandwidth to tackle these well. But the developer team has been thinking about these issues for a long time and some pieces can be done as we go in small chunks (good, right?), so I would like to start a series of design pages on Trac to record the areas where we see these fitting into cnx.org – and document where they already exist.

API's
  • Import/Export of modules, collections, metadata
    • To CNX
    • To IMS compliant systems (is this good enough for CNX?)
    • Word, LaTeX, HTML, DocBook?
  • Import/Export of lenses
  • Import/Export of account information
RSS
  • recent.rss -- done!
  • lenses (things added, things updated)
  • author’s content
  • single module changes?
Tagging
  • Currently in lenses
  • Unify with keywords
  • Let non-lens makers tag
Social networks
  • Lenses
  • Bookmarks
