Behavior of Search, Browse and Display with respect to the Author's profile.

Summary: The author profile contains fields for First Name, Middle Name, Last Name and Full Name and these fields are used to search, browse and display the author's names. When the full name and last, first name do not match, the name displayed will not show up in the browse by list, nor will modules and courses by that entity show up in searches.

  • Full Name is the way the author shows up on the “By:“ line in a module or course.
  • Full Name is also how author shows up on the “Member Profile: “ line when looking up an author's profile.
  • Full name is not searched at all. So if the full name has unique elements, they will not show up in a search. First, Middle, and Last Name ARE searched.
  • Browse by uses the Last Name field only to index authors.

Ah, hysterical raisins. My intent in designating a fullname field in our metadata was to allow authors to list an alternative form of their name, not assume 'fullname == firstname + middle + lastname', and use fullname wherever appropriate. Unfortunately, the the _value_ fell victim to the 'where do we store the metadata' problem: it's actually stored in the ZODB, rather than the DB, so module search has no idea what it is. I agree, this is a usability bug/misfeature/half-baked idea that needs to be cleaned up.

Fully-baked idea, runny undercooked implementation. Blame Brent. ;) I believe the behavior we want would be straightforward to define and implement. Should this just be a bug report?
