Recommended reading for learning more about TeX from John Culleton in comp.text.tex.

LaTeX tends to make the simple more complicated because the use of primitive commands like \parskip may upset some higher level applecart. To get a better sense of how primitive commands operate I suggest the free paper "A Gentle Introduction to TeX" or the books: The TeXBook by Donald Knuth
"A Beginners Book of TeX" by Seroul and Levy
"TeX for the Impatient" by Paul Abrahams et al.
These books can be found on Amazon Marketplace. "The TeXbbok" may still be in print.
